Openreach to Limit PSTN Performance

Openreach to restrict performance over copper services to force a move to digital alternatives

Openreach is planning to trial a set of service management measures to encourage customers still using analogue phone lines to contact their provider and upgrade to digital alternatives.

The trials in Salisbury, Wiltshire and Suffolk, will see restrictions introduced that prevent outbound telephone calls and limit broadband speeds. This is designed to prompt customers into action and take up alternative digital voice services, and/or full fibre broadband.

Calls to emergency services are excluded from the trials.

Openreach is continuing to work with communications providers to migrate their customers onto digital technologies ahead of a 2025 deadline when BT intends to retire the analogue PSTN system.

Openreach said that by “adjusting the performance of the remaining analogue services”, customers in the trial areas will be prompted to contact their provider and upgrade their line.

If these trials prove successful, Openreach will look to use the measures to help providers prepare for the UK wide switch off at the end of 2025.

Are you Switched On?

Reports show that only a third of small businesses, and less than 10% of larger enterprises are aware of the Switch Off - which means some may be in for a surprise.

We're here to help

The fact that old copper-based services are going away shouldn’t be a cause for concern.

If you are unsure about the switch off, or want to check your options, let us know a good time to talk and one of the team will be in touch.
