The prices in this article are indicative only and should not be used as a definitive list of call charges. Actual costs depend on your communication provider and a number of factors such as individual calling plans, time of day and the exact number called.

01 and 02 numbers: Geographic Numbers

Calls to 01 and 02 numbers relate to specific locations in the UK and are used for homes and in businesses. They are often referred to as Local, or National UK calls. Calls from a landlines are typically charged anywhere from 1p up to 13p per minute, depending on your provider/plan.

If you use a free minute plan on your landline or mobile, calls to these numbers will be included in that plan.

03 numbers: UK-Wide Geographic Numbers

Many organisations now use 03 numbers as an alternative to more expensive 08 numbers.  These numbers still provide a 'Non-Geographic' presence, but calls should cost no more than calls to geographic numbers and must be included in inclusive minutes and discount schemes in the same way.

Did you know? The 0300 number range specifically is reserved for designated public bodies and registered UK charities.

07: Mobile Numbers

Most people will be familiar with mobile numbers. Calls to mobiles are charged anywhere from 3p up to 20p per minute from landlines.

Call costs from mobiles vary according to the calling plan chosen. Typically, they cost between 3p and 55p per minute, but most mobile plans will include a level of free minutes to standard mobile networks.

070: Personal Numbers

070 numbers are different from mobile numbers, and calls to them are a lot more expensive.

Personal numbers are, essentially, virtual telephone numbers providing service in the UK.  The service provides a flexible virtual telephone number which can be routed to any other number, including international mobiles!

070 numbers can cost between 10p and run anywhere up to £3 or £4 per minute if calling from a landline (and often include a call set-up fee).

0800 and 0808: Freephone Numbers

Calls to 0800 and 0808 numbers are free of charge from all consumer landlines and mobile phones.

084: Service Numbers

These service numbers are generally used by organisations for sales or enquiry lines. The cost of calling 0843, 0844 and 0845 numbers is made up of two parts: an access charge, and a service charge.  

The access charge is a rate set by your phone company.  This can range anywhere from 8p up to 67p.

This is added to the service charge, which varies depending on the specific number dialled, anywhere between 0p and 13p per minute. Some number ranges also carry a set-up fee.

 

Three-digit numbers

Calls to 999, 111 ,112, 116 and 105 are free from all phones.

Calls to 101, from both landlines and mobiles, cost 15p including VAT

Calls to 123 vary according to your phone provider.

09: Premium Numbers

09 numbers are mainly used for competitions, TV voting, horoscopes, chat lines, adult lines, recorded information and professional advice services. These numbers are regulated by Phone-paid Services Authority

The cost of calling 09 numbers is made up of two parts: an access charge, and a service charge.  

The access charge is a rate set by your phone company.  This can range anywhere from 8p up to 67p.

This is added to the service charge, which varies depending on the specific number dialled, but for 09 numbers can range from 1p up to £3.60 per minute. You may also be charged a one-off call cost ranging from 5p to £6.

118 directory enquiry numbers

Calls to directory enquiry numbers (starting 118) can vary significantly in price depending on the directory enquiry service and the phone company you call from.

Typically, most calls include a one-off connection charge and then a separate per minute rate.

The one-off charge is typically up to £4.50 and the additional per minute charge is typically up to £4.50. However, some providers may charge significantly more

(up to £15.99 one off charge and £7.99 per minute).

116 Numbers

116 numbers are used for certain services of social value which have the same six-digit number across the European Union. They are:

116 numbers are free to call from any phone, whether landline or mobile.
